JAPAN CUTS: MORI, THE ARTIST HABITAT PG
Director: Shuichi OkitaDuration: 99 minsLanguage: Japanese with English Subtitles

In the final 3 decades of his life, celebrated Japanese artist Morikazu Kumagai never took a step outside his home- to be quite specific, he never quite left his own backyard.

Played by the inimitable Tsutomu Yamazaki as the 'hermit sage' Mori, we venture into the massive, bustling garden of a gray-bearded Gulliver lost in his own little paradise of ants, birds and cats - a personal zen habitat that inspired much of his late career flourish without the vexing need for human interaction, much to the chagrin of his long-suffering wife. But even in his joyful self-imposed exile from society, the world begins to catch up on him in the form of bumbling prying neighbours and land developments - will his beautiful wonderland endure?

Slyly humourous and ridiculously charming with a memorably touching final performance and tribute to the recently late veteran Kirin Kiri (Shoplifters, After The Storm) MORI, THE ARTIST'S HABITAT is a picturesque dive into an introverted world that is all at once inviting and infinite in its colour and imagination - a thoroughly playful celebration of artistic eccentrics and their stubborn, fascinating way of life.
