"High and Low" is a crime thriller that contrasts the lives of the wealthy and the poor in post-war Japan. The film centers around Kingo Gondo, a successful executive who is on the verge of taking control of a shoe company. However, his life is thrown into chaos when his chauffeur's son is mistakenly kidnapped instead of his own.

Divided into two distinct halves - the film the first focuses on the moral dilemma faced by Gondo, and the second follows the intense police investigation to track down the kidnapper. "High and Low" is praised for its gripping narrative, Toshiro Mifune’s powerful performance, and its critique of classism in 1960’s Japan.
