A middle-aged bureaucrat, facing a terminal illness, realizes the emptiness of his life and seeks to find meaning in his remaining days. He dedicates himself to building a children's playground, a symbol of hope and renewal for future generations.

Kurosawa uses a non-linear narrative structure, with the second half of the film told through the eyes of Watanabe's colleagues as they reflect on his final days. “Ikiru” explores themes of mortality, legacy, and our desire for living a truly meaningful existence in what’s considered an enduring and thought-provoking masterpiece.
