Set in feudal Japan, "Rashomon" is a psychological thriller that explores the nature of truth and human perception. The film revolves around the accounts of four witnesses to a violent crime: a samurai's murder and the rape of his wife. Each tells a different version of the events, all of which contradict one another. Through the contrasting narratives, Kurosawa delves into the subjectivity of memory and the elusiveness of objective truth.

The film's innovative use of flashbacks and its exploration of moral ambiguity had a profound impact on cinema, making "Rashomon" a landmark in film history. It was also the first Japanese film to gain significant international recognition, winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
