Film Festival

26th German Film Festival x KinoFest 2023 to

Co-presented by Goethe-Institut Singapore and The Projector

Goethe-Institut Singapore is proud to present the 26th anniversary of one of the longest-running foreign film festivals in Singapore, the German Film Festival. This year, for the first time, we present a selection of films in collaboration with KinoFest, the new regional film festival initiated by Goethe-Institut.

This year’s films are a tapestry of stories that weave together not merely a rich telling of contemporary German cinema, but glimpses into complex identities and realities that find themselves caught amid ever-changing multicultural landscapes.

Opening film Sun and Concrete is a gritty coming-of-age film based on Felix Lobrecht’s best-selling autobiographical novel, and directed by David Wnendt, known for his high-octane adaptations. Don't miss the in person post-show Q&A with Lobrecht himself and director David Wnendton on Wed 25 Oct 7.30pm.

Films like Sisi & I, We Might As Well Be Dead, Elaha, Toubab, and Seven Winters in Tehran bring us individual encounters and their struggle against systems—some strange and dystopian, some oppressive and unjustly bureaucratic.

Dancing Pina celebrates the inimitable Pina Bausch, and practitioners who keep her work alive; through the stories and bodies of these dancers, we’re shown how life and art are inextricable.

And for the first time since 2019, Goethe-Institut Singapore brings back their crowd-pleasing outdoor screening with an animated adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s The Amazing Maurice. More information about this outdoor screening HERE.

All cinema sings of encounter, and for a precious few hours, gifts us access—perhaps even understanding, to the worlds of others; and so we invite you, simply and earnestly, to join us in its partaking.
